The then-pair were later spotted hanging out several times, including one during their getaway to the Caribbean. Following the trip, they reportedly went separate ways in January 2013.
In 2014, Taylor dropped a track titled "Out of the Woods". On it, she sings, "Looking at it now, last December/ We were built to fall apart, then fall back together/ Your necklace hanging from my neck." The verse led Swifties to think that the song is about the former One Direction singer as she was spotted wearing his paper airplane necklace during a public outing. "Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying," she adds.
