The actress, who played Stevie Budd on 'Schitt's Creek', issues a public apology after she and her friend wore costumes to resemble Johnny and Amber's outfits from their highly-publicized 2022 defamation trial

AceShowbiz - Emily Hampshire has regretted her costume choice for Halloween. Having faced backlash for dressing up as Johnny Depp, the "Schitt's Creek" star expressed her remorse, saying she's "deeply sorry and ashamed" of her action.

The 42-year-old issued her apology via Instagram on Wednesday, November 1. "I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I've ever done," she began. "For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe."

"I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny," she added. "These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my action. In the future I will do better. I'm so sorry."

Emily landed in hot water after she and her friend wore costumes to resemble Johnny and Amber's outfits from their highly-publicized 2022 defamation trial. In the since-deleted photos, "The Rig" star could be seen sporting a beige pinstriped suit with makeup to imitate Johnny's facial hair and tattoos. Her pal, in the meantime, wore a ruffled button down, black skirt, and sheer black tights to recreate one of Amber's trial outfits.

Many on X (formerly Twitter) were quick to slam Emily over her poor decision. "It really is a special kind of depraved to keep the costumes going a full year and a half later. @emilyhampshire clearly felt the need to rise to the task," one person argued. Another chimed in, "This is so beyond disappointing to see from @emilyhampshire. Words can't articulate how let down and disgusted I feel."

Johnny and Amber were embroiled in a six-week trial over a piece Amber wrote in 2018 about being a victim of domestic violence. The "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor ultimately winning over $10 million in damages after winning all three of his defamation claims while she was awarded $2 million after winning one of her three countersuit claims.
