The third and final installment in the 'Jurassic World' trilogy scores a massive debut despite being widely-panned by critics, while the 'Top Gun' sequel stays strong on its third weekend.

AceShowbiz - "Jurassic World: Dominion" has ruled the North American box office. Surpassing expectations of $125 million opening in the U.S. and Canada, the movie has stomped to the top of this week's chart with a massive $143 million from 4,676 cinemas.

"Seeing a title like 'Jurassic' on the big screen is exactly what summer movie season is about," says Jim Orr, Universal's president of domestic distribution. "We couldn't be happier," he adds of the film's box office performance. " 'Jurassic World Dominion' had a very broad and ridiculously enthusiastic audience."

Around 10.8 million moviegoers turned up to see "Dominion" domestically, representing around 66% of the overall moviegoing audience during the weekend, according to data from EntTelligence. This has proven that critics' reviews, which were mostly not in favor of the movie, didn't dampen the spirit of fans to watch the last installment in the "Jurassic World" trilogy.

"This is an excellent opening," David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, says of "Dominion". "Reviews are weak, but that has never stopped these beasts." Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Comscore, echoes the sentiment as saying, "You want to see dinosaurs on the big screen, it doesn’t matter what critics thought."

A significant portion of ticket sales came from enhanced formats, like Imax and 3D. From Imax alone, the film rang up $12.3 million in North America and $12.7 million internationally. In total, premium formats accounted for approximately 25% of all global revenues for "Dominion", according to Comscore.

"The appetite for the colossal creatures in this franchise is still voracious, and the way audiences want to experience this movie is in 3D," says RealD's CEO and president Travis Reid, whose company brings 3D screens to theaters.

Internationally, the film has earned around $245.8 million since opening earlier this month, bringing its global tally to just under $390 million.

The arrival of the new champion pushes Tom Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick" to the second place. Despite the dinosaur movie's domination, the action drama pic stays strong by pulling in an estimated $50 million on its third weekend. The "Top Gun" sequel has now collected $747 million worldwide.

Also down one place, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" is now a third place finisher with approximately $4.9 million, bringing its global tally closer to $1 billion mark. "The Bob's Burgers Movie" also falls one spot to No. 4 with an estimated $2.3 million, while "The Bad Guys" trails close behind at No. 5 with approximately $2.2 million.
