The wife of Prince Albert has been battling poor health over the past few months that forced her to extend her trip to her native South Africa for six months.

AceShowbiz - Princess Charlene has canceled an upcoming appearance at Monaco's upcoming National Day, citing ongoing health issues.

The former Olympic swimmer will be taking a temporary break from public activities after battling an infection during a trip to her native South Africa in May 2021 that prevented her from flying home for six months. She recently returned to Monaco, but is still in recovery.

"A period of calm and rest is necessary to ensure the very best recovery for Princess Charlene's health," a spokesman says. "Having battled with poor health over the past few months, the Princess is currently convalescing and will continue to do so for the coming weeks, allowing her time to recover from a state of profound general fatigue."

"In order to protect the comfort and privacy essential to her recovery, the Princess' location will remain strictly confidential."

"Princess Charlene will be unable to attend this year's Fete Nationale celebrations, alongside her family and the people of Monaco. As soon as Her health permits, the Princess looks forward to once again carrying out her duties and spending time with the Monegasques... Information on the Princess' health will be communicated in due course ahead of the Christmas holidays."

Princess Charlene contracted a sinus and ear pressure infection in early May 2021 while in South Africa. A series of corrective surgeries that came after prevented her from going back to Monaco. It prompted speculations about her marriage with Prince Albert, who later clarified, "She didn't go into exile. It was absolutely just a medical problem which had to be treated."

On November 8, the 43-year-old was finally able to reunite with her husband and their six-year-old twins, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, in Monaco. Celebrating her return, she posted on Instagram, "Happy day today. Thank you all for keeping me strong !!"
