In the fifth and new installment of the slasher film franchise, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is forced to revisit her dark past after a new killer goes on a killing spree in Woodsboro.

AceShowbiz - The hunting season has begun in the first trailer for new "Scream" movie. Courtesy of Paramount Pictures, the trailer opens with the Ghostface killer attacking one of its victims, Tara (Jenna Ortega).

Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past.

After several casualties, Dewey Riley (David Arquette) contacts Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) to alert her about the return of the Ghostface killer. "It's happening, three attacks so far. Do you have a gun?" he asks her over the phone. Sidney responds, "I'm Sidney Prescott, of course I have a gun," followed by Dewey saying, "Something about this one just feels different."

Forced to revisit her dark past, Sidney meets a group of teenagers now being targeted by Ghostface. "I've been through this, a lot," she tells them. "This is your life now, which means whoever this is is going to keep coming for you."

Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) later joins forces with Neve to confront whatever they're coming for. "You ready?" Sidney asks her in the clip. "For this? Never," Gale replies. Meanwhile, Dave shares his wisdom to the new targets. "There are certain rules to survive," he tells the newbies.

The new cast includes Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Sonia Ammar. Billed as a relaunch of the franchise, the upcoming film is a direct sequel to 2011's "Scream 4", and the first in the series not to be directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015.

Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original "Scream", however, is back as executive producer, with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett at the helm. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick wrote the script, while Gary Barber, Cathy Konrad, Ron Lynch, Marianne Maddalena, Peter Oillataguerre and Chad Villella also executive produce the movie.

Arquette revealed there's a sense of comfort knowing that Williamson is part of the film. "Knowing that Kevin Williamson was an executive producer on it set me at ease," the actor explained. "He really knows the tone. I mean, he set the whole world up!"

"Scream" is set to hit U.S. theaters on January 14, 2022.
