AceShowbiz - Aaliyah's former boyfriend Damon Dash speaks on her feelings following the annulment of her controversial marriage to R. Kelly. In a clip of Lifetime's new documentary "Surviving R. Kelly Part II: The Reckoning", the Roc-A-Fella co-founder blasts the "I Believe I Can Fly" singer and defends his late ex, suggesting she's a victim in the drama surrounding the illegal marriage.
"Aaliyah was like the sacrificial lamb after all that bulls**t 'cause she didn't deserve none of that," he says in the clip obtained by TMZ. Praising the "Try Again" songstress for harboring no ill feelings, the record executive reveals all Aaliyah wanted was to keep Kelly away from her. "Good, good soul. Good girl. Wasn't even that resentful, was just like, 'Let that man live just keep him the f**k away from me.' That's all she wanted. She was just happy to be away," he adds.
He goes on dishing, "And I know the whole story. I know there was a cover-up and all of that, but how did that cover it up? It just made the conversation less crazy. Oh, he married a child? That was a headline. That was like a rumor. That was something talked about like it was normal. It wasn't like, 'Eww disgusting he married a 13-year-old.' It was like, 'Oh, you married Aaliyah?' She's 13."
When the interviewer corrects him that Aaliyah was actually 15 when she married Kelly, Dash replies, "15 is 13. I don't have to be accurate because I don't care." He goes on blasting Kelly for marrying the then-underage singer, "15, 13, anything under 18 is disgusting. You know what I mean? She was a child, bro."
"Surviving R. Kelly Part II: The Reckoning" airs in three parts on January 2, 3 and 4.
Back in January 2019, Dash said in an interview with Hip Hop Motivation about Kelly, "That dude was a bad man," but wouldn't talk further about Aaliyah's relationship with the disgraced singer. "I didn't really wanna know what he did to the extent that I might feel the need ... to deal with it," he explained. "Just 'cause that's what a man does. But it just was so much hurt for her to revisit it. It was like, 'I wouldn't even wanna revisit it without a professional.' Whatever got done was terrible."
Last December, Kelly recently pleaded not guilty to bribery allegation that was added to the revamped federal indictment against him brought by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn. He is accused of having another person offer a bribe to a government official to create a fake ID for a person identified by the pseudonym "Jane Doe #1," who is believed to be Aaliyah.
In a 2008 interview, Kelly's tour manager, Demetrius Smith, said that he facilitated the wedding by obtaining falsified identification for Aaliyah which listed her as 18 years of age. Their marriage was annulled in 1995 and Aaliyah died in a plane accident at 22 years old in 2001.
