In a new interview, the singer also admits to feeling conflicted over the fact that Kim Kardashian has worked with President Donald Trump on several occasions regarding criminal justice reform.

AceShowbiz - John Legend and Kanye West have always been friendly with each other, often taking photos together while attending awards shows and the like. However, their friendship has taken a negative turn over the past year or so, especially after the hip-hop mogul publicly voiced his support for President Donald Trump, the man whom John has always criticized.

In the cover story for Vanity Fair's November issue, John opens up about his estranged friendship with Kanye due to POTUS. "I'm not trying to disown Kanye because I still love him and love everything we've done together creatively, but we were never the closest of friends," he says, before reflecting on the time when he sent texts to Kanye in April 2018 to caution him against his close association with Trump and the "harm that Trump's policies cause, especially to people of color."

The text was meant to be private, but Kanye decided to make it public and justified it as examples of people "around me that disagree with me and voice their opinion." He also noted that he respected his opinion, but "I stand my ground."

Thinking back about that time, John says to the magazine, "I think what was always challenging about it was Kanye has never been political. I don't think he knows one way or another what policies of Trump's he likes. He's just kind of embraced Trump's blow-it-all-up spirit and the energy of himself being counter-cultural in supporting him."

Not only Kanye's public support for Trump, but John also admits to feeling conflicted over the fact that Kim Kardashian has worked with the president on several occasions regarding criminal justice reform. While the "All of Me" singer acknowledges that it's ultimately a win for the "real people with families," he still thinks Trump as a "terrible human being" because he's still "locking kids in cages."

Chrissy Teigen, who is also featured in the cover story, then chimes in, "To be able to go in there and put whatever you hate about him aside to do this greater good for this person? I don't know if I could physically muster that smile and handshake."
