In a new television interview, the winner of 'The Masked Singer Australia' believes his girlfriend never meant to insult the LGBTQ community and people just took her comments 'the wrong way.'

AceShowbiz - Cody Simpson came to Miley Cyrus's defense after she received backlash over her gay comments. "People took that the wrong way I think," he said. "You don't choose who you fall for, you don't choose who you love, whatever gender, whoever you are. No, she's wonderful."

He also said, "She's been through a lot this year, I was trying to be respectful of that. We found each other in a place where we were both ready for something like this." He added, "We're both sober. I actually stopped drinking the day I started 'The Masked Singer'."

He defended his girlfriend during a visit to Australian talk show "The Project". The television interview came hot on the heels of his victory on "The Masked Singer Australia". He competed on the singing show in the guise of The Robot.

Miley came under fire for seemingly suggesting that sexuality was a choice. "There are good men out there, guys, don't give up," she previously said in an expletive-laden rant on Instagram Live. "You don't have to be gay, there are good people with d**ks out there, you've just got to find them."

She then quickly clarified her comments. "I was talking s**t about sucky guys," she explained to her Twitter followers. "But let me be clear, YOU don't CHOOSE your sexuality. You are born as you are. It has always been my priority to protect the LGBTQ community I am a part of."
