Just two days before news of their breakup hit the web, the pair joined their "Riverdale" co-stars in the panel for The CW series at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, and everyone could feel the strange atmosphere around them.
In one video that circulated online, Lili appeared to be snubbing her ex-boyfriend. In the video, Cole and Lili, who play a love interest for each other, sat on different couches. Cole, who plays Jughead on the Archie Comics series, was later seen handing a mic to Lili. The later initially reached to him to get the mic, but then she retracted her hand and slowly shook her head.
If the exchange wasn't awkward enough, Lili's recent online activity made it even more uncomfortable. The 22-year-old actress was caught "liking" the video of the awkward moment on Twitter.
A fan who uploaded the clip wrote in the caption, "Quando estou prestes a fazer uma coisa de errado e mudo de ideia," which translates to, "When I'm about to do something wrong and change my mind."
It was said that Cole was overheard telling a friend that he and Lili were no longer together while promoting "Riverdale" at SDCC. Of their split, an insider previously claimed to PEOPLE, "Their friends didn't really expect them to last in the long-run. At the end of the day, their personalities are very different and their lifestyles often clashed."
The source added, "Things have felt super heavy in the relationship for a while, and it got to be too much. They're both very professional though and trying to be as amicable and friendly as possible."
The former lovebirds have always been private when it comes to their romance, and it seems like the constant attention to their relationship contributes to their decision to go separate ways. In March, Cole told the Los Angeles Times that he and Lili were struggling with all the attention surrounding their relationship, explaining, "It's one of those things that I still sort of grapple with, and Lili and I grapple with."
Although Cole and Lili are no longer together in real life, the two will return for upcoming season 4 of "Riverdale" to reprise their roles as lovebirds Jughead and Betty. The cast started filming season four earlier this month with the new season arriving sometime this year.
