EP Mark Burnett has reportedly grown respect for the Maroon 5 frontman, who has served as coach for 16 seasons, and will always welcome him if he does want to return in the future.

AceShowbiz - Adam Levine shocked everyone when he announced his departure from "The Voice" ahead of season 17. However, a new report suggests that the Maroon 5 frontman, who has been with the show as a coach for 16 seasons, is always welcomed to be back on the long-running NBC singing competition reality series.

"He is likely done for good but always will have the invite to come back down the line if he changes his mind," says a source to HollywoodLife.com. "Adam is a tough pill to swallow and he definitely goes to the beat of his own drum but he is a part of the fabric that made 'The Voice' tick."

The insider goes on saying that executive producer Mark Burnett has grown respect for him and will always welcome him if he does want to return in the future. "Mark Burnett respects what he has done for the show and would welcome him back even though he doesn't expect him back," adds the source.

It was reported that the 40-year-old singer left "The Voice" because he "didn't like the changes" to the show's format last season. "He's been wanting to move on for a while," another source previously spilled to PEOPLE. "They wanted him to stay but he just really wanted to move on. It's something he's been talking to [host] Carson [Daly] and the other coaches about for some time."

Adam wasn't a fan of the Live Cross Battles, which was first introduced in season 16. The new round sees two coaches going head to head in a "live schoolyard pick" by each selecting one artist from their team to go up against another team's artist. After performing an individual song, the viewer will vote to decide their fate. This last season saw Adam having his entire team eliminated by the time the show reached at the Top 8.

"He really didn't like some of the changes to the format of the show last season, and it’s just time for him to leave," explained the source. "It wouldn't be surprising if he came back to visit the show though. There's new music coming soon for him, he'll be touring and he plans to continue acting. He's staying busy."

Adam confirmed his exit in an emotional Facebook post, writing, "About 8 years ago, (executive producer) Mark Burnett convinced us to sign up for this show where you sit in a big red chair with your back turned away from the singers on the stage. First thank you must go to Mark. We had no idea what we were doing or where it was going."

Gwen Stefani has been set to return as a coach for the 17th season of "The Voice".
