The 'Saving Mr. Banks' actress is reportedly in talks to join the cast of the live-action movie about the classic '101 Dalmatians' villain Cruella de Vil.

AceShowbiz - Emma Thompson could be heading back to the world of Disney with a "Cruella" role after voicing Mrs. Potts in "Beauty and the Beast (2017)". The two-time Academy Award-winning actress is reportedly currently in negotiations to star in the live-action movie about the classic "101 Dalmatians" villain Cruella de Vil.

The role offered to the veteran British actress is currently unknown as the talks are still in "early" stage, according to Variety which first reported the news. If the 60-year-old thespian signs up for the movie, she will star opposite Emma Stone, who has been tapped to portray the titular character.

"Cruella" will tell the origin story of the fashionable woman who is obsessed by the dalmatian puppies. The movie will reportedly be set in the early 1980s with a punk vibe. Glenn Close played the character, who was the head of a fashion house, in the 1996 movie.

An alleged synopsis for the upcoming movie reveals "Estella (Cruella De Vil) lives on the streets of 1970's London with other hoodlums, where we learn the real origins behind Estella's hatred of Dalmatians," but the specific storyline is not confirmed yet.

Previously, it was reported that Thompson, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Julianne Moore and Demi Moore were eyed for a pivotal role in "Cruella". They were reportedly circling the role of the " 'Baroness,' who is described as an antagonist to Cruella and is pivotal to her rise as the classic Disney villain." It appears that Thompson has now edged out the other A-list stars, though it's not clear if she's still attached to the same part.

"I, Tonya" helmer Craig Gillespie will be serving behind the lens, with Tony McNamara writing the most recent version of the script. The movie is currently slated to arrive on December 23, 2020.

Thompson recently starred in "Johnny English Strikes Again" and "King Lear", which were both released last year. She will reprise her role as Agent O in "Men in Black: International" and will also be seen in drama comedy "Late Night", which is penned and also starring Mindy Kaling, and in Paul Feig-directed romantic comedy "Last Christmas".
