A sequel to the live-action movie starring Emma Stone is reportedly already in development after the film has grossed $48.5 million globally following its release last week.

AceShowbiz - Disney will continue to dabble in paw business for the time being. The studio is reportedly already in early development of a follow-up to the Emma Stone starrer, "Cruella", only a week after the movie hit U.S. theaters and some international markets.

Craig Gillespie and Tony McNamara, who served as director and screenwriter respectively for the first movie, are expected to return in their roles for the second movie. Other details, such as cast and plotline, are currently unknown, but it's very likely that Stone will reprise her role as the title character. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news.

It's not unexpected that Disney wants to develop a "Cruella" sequel considering its gleaming box office performance. The live-action movie focusing on the "101 Dalmatians" villain debuted to $32.4 million in the United States and Canada in its first week and $16.1 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $48.5 million. It placed second on the North American box office, behind the long-awaited horror sequel "A Quiet Place Part II" which opened to a massive $69.1 million, a record-breaking opening in the pandemic era.

"Cruella" was also released simultaneously on Disney+ with Premier Access on March 28. According to Samba TV, the film was watched by about 686,000 American households in its debut weekend (39% behind "Mulan (2019)" (1.12 million)), resulting in around $20.57 million in revenue for Disney. The company also reported 83,000 U.K. households watched the film (resulting in $2.35 million), 15,000 in Germany, and 9,000 in Australia.

"We are very pleased with 'Cruella' 's box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date," a Disney spokesperson said in a statement responding to the movie's performance. "The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A's in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film."

The first "Cruella" movie centers on Estella (Stone), a young and clever grifter who's determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world. She soon meets a pair of thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they build a life for themselves on the streets of London. However, when Estella befriends fashion legend Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), she embraces her wicked side to become the raucous and revenge-bent Cruella.
