Disney's latest live-action movie still tops the domestic chart despite debuting to lower than expectations, while the Harmony Korine-directed movie gives McConaughey the worst opening of his career.

AceShowbiz - "Dumbo" failed to soar on its opening weekend despite the charm that it's brought upon audience in theaters. The live-action adaptation of Disney's classic animation debuted to approximately $45 million in North America.
While it's enough to bring the family fantasy movie on the top of the chart, the opening cume fell short of analysts' expectations of around $50 million. The Tim Burton-directed movie has collected $71 million from international markets, bringing its global haul to $116 million so far against its reported budget of $170 million.
"Dumbo" got mixed reviews from critics, receiving 53 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While the reviews didn't help attract moviegoers, those who have watched the movie were apparently not disappointed as they gave the film an A-minus overall, according to CinemaScore.
"We think it's a solid start," Cathleen Taff, Disney's executive vice president of theatrical distribution, says of the movie's performance in its first week. "We're encouraged and hopeful with audience word of mouth."
Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore's senior media analyst, also comments on "Dumbo" opening weekend, "I don't think this is a mandate against live-action remakes. But sometimes when you don't have the reviews, it can affect it." He adds, "For Disney, the bar is set so high. This is just a little speed bump on what is already a spectacular year for Disney."
With "Dumbo" landing atop the chart, Jordan Peele's "Us" is moved to No. 2 with additional $33.6 million. The horror movie has accumulated $$128.2 million domestically and $46.3 million overseas for a current worldwide total of $174.5 million.
"For a horror movie, which generally have the scariest drops in the business, 'Us' is really holding in there," Dergarabedian says of "Us", which is down only 52.7% in its second week. "It's good news for Jordan Peele."
"Captain Marvel" also drops another spot to No. 3 with approximately $20.5 million in its fourth weekend. With additional $26.4 million abroad, the Brie Larson-starring superhero movie is close to crossing $1 billion globally ($990.6 million).
Holding on to No. 4 is "Five Feet Apart" with additional $6.2 million. Rounding out the top five is another newcomer, "Unplanned". The drama, which targets the faith-based audience, debuted to an estimated $6.1 million, which has covered its reported production budget of just $6 million.
On the other hand, Matthew McConaughey's latest film "The Beach Bum" is a disappointment at box office. The R-rated drama comedy from Harmony Korine only bagged approximately $1.8 million to place tenth on its opening weekend. This marks the Oscar-winning actor's lowest opening for a film opening on over 1,000 screens. It's also lower than the $4.8 million debut of Korine's previous movie "Spring Breakers", which debuted to $4.8 million in 2013.
