AceShowbiz - WarnerMedia is developing an animated series of the Gremlins. The planned series will air on WarnerMedia's upoming streaming service, according to Variety.
The new animated series is said to be centering on Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather from the original movies. The planned show will see him as a young man as he goes on adventures with the friendly Mogwai Gizmo. The character was portrayed by Keye Luke in the feature which was executive produced by Steven Spielberg back in 1984.
The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television. Both of them were involved in the films on which the show will be based. Tze Chun, who co-founded comic book publisher TKO Studios, has been attached to write and executive produce the series.
Chun's credits include 2013's "Cold Comes the Night", which starred Bryan Cranston, and 2009's "Children of Invention". He was also the one behind TV shows such as FOX's "Gotham" and ABC's "Once Upon a Time".
"Gremlins" is a comedy horror movie which was directed by Joe Dante. It followed a young man who receives a strange creature called a mogwai as a pet. The pet then spawned other creatures who transform into small, destructive, evil monsters. While the movie was a commercial success and received positive reviews from critics, some critized the film for some of its more violent sequences.
Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Frances Lee McCain and Corey Feldman starred in the flick. The cast members also included John Louie, Dick Miller, Jackie Joseph and Polly Holliday.
The first movie grossed over $153 million worldwide on a reported budget of $11 million. Its sequel, "Gremlins 2: The New Batch", followed in in 1990 A sequel with Dante returning to direct.
