Disney is reportedly exploring a reboot of the Johnny Depp-starring franchise with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick in talks to write the script.

AceShowbiz - Disney isn't ready to end the journey of "Pirates of the Caribbean" after five films. The studio is reportedly considering to reboot its billion dollar franchise with "Deadpool" scribe duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick in talks to write the script.

According to Deadline which first reported the news, Jerry Bruckheimer will continue in charge of the franchise as producer. It's unclear, though, if the new installment will feature all new cast members or if any of the original stars, including Johnny Depp, will return for the new project. Disney has not commented on the news as nothing is set in stone just yet.

Reese and Wernick wrote the script for "Deadpool" and its sequel "Deadpool 2". The writing duo has also worked on "Zombieland" and "6 Underground", the latter of which is directed by Michael Bay for Netflix for a 2019 release. The action film is starring Ryan Reynolds and has been filmed in various cities in Italy, including Florence, Rome, Siena and Taranto.

Depp has starred as Captain Jack Sparrow in all five "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, which kicked off with "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" in 2003. Based on the Pirates of the Caribbean theme ride attraction which opened at Disneyland in 1967, it follows the eccentric pirate on his numerous adventures.

The latest installment, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales", was released in 2017 and brought in Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites to the fold as new protagonists, with Orlando Bloom reprising his role as Will Turner and Javier Bardem playing the villain, Captain Armando Salazar. It grossed $172.6 million in North America and collected a worldwide total of $794.9 million. All five films of the franchise have accumulated gross of $4.5 billion over 14 years.
