'Short Treks', which is made of short stories titled 'Runaway', 'Calypso', 'The Brightest Star' and 'The Escape Artist', is set to kick things off on October 4.

AceShowbiz - While fans have to wait until next year for a second season of "Star Trek: Discovery", CBS All Access treats fans to "Star Trek: Short Treks" series that consists of 4 mini episodes. First announced at San Diego Comic-Con, the standalone short stories will focus on a key character including Mary Wiseman's Tilly, Doug Jones' Saru and Rainn Wilson's Harry Mudd.
It is set to kick off on October 4 with its first short story titled "Runaway". The official logline of "Runaway" reads, "Onboard the U.S.S. Discovery, Ensign Tilly encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help. However, this unlikely pair may have more in common than meets the eye." It is based on the script by Jenny Lumet & "Star Trek: Discovery" showrunner Alex Kurtzman, while Maja Vrvilo directed.
It will later be followed with "Calypso" on November 8. "After waking up in an unfamiliar sickbay, Craft (Aldis Hodge) finds himself on board a deserted ship, and his only companion and hope for survival is an A.I. computer interface," reads the description. Michael Chabon, story by Sean Cochran and Michael Chabon worked on the teleplay while Olatunde Osunsanmi served behind the lens.
Written by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt, "The Brightest Star" will follow the life of the young Saru with his father and sister on his home planet of Kaminar. The official logline teases, "Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path." "The Brightest Star" to air on December 6. Douglas Aarnioskoski directed the episode.
The last short story, "The Escape Artist", will round out the mini-episodes on January 3. In "The Escape Artist", Harry Mudd, back to his old tricks of stealing and double-dealing, finds himself in a precarious position aboard a hostile ship -- just in time to try out his latest con." Wilson directed the episode with Michael McMahan writing the script.
"There is no shortage of compelling stories to tell in the Star Trek universe that inspire, entertain and either challenge our preconceived ideas or affirm long-held beliefs, and we are excited to broaden the universe already with 'Short Treks'," Kurtzman previously said of the mini-episodes. "Each episode will deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come in future 'Star Trek: Discovery' episodes. They'll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of 'Star Trek'."
