AceShowbiz - Joss Whedon's beloved "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is getting a TV reboot. The new take on the supernatural drama is reportedly being developed at Fox 21 TV Studios with Whedon serving as excecutive producer.

"Midnight, Texas" creator Monica Owusu-Breen is attached as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Also executive producing the new project are the original series' EPs Gail Berman, Fran Kazui and Kaz Kazui as well as Joe Earley from Berman's Jackal Group.

The new show is said to be contemporary, building on the mythology of the original. "Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today," said the producers.

Some sources reveal that the producers intend to make the new series diverse by casting an African American actor to be the new slayer. However, the sources noted that the project is still in the very beginning stage of development with no script, so none has been confirmed.

The original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" aired for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003. The original stars, who include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head and David Boreanaz, reunited last year to celebrate the cult series' 20th anniversary.

Previously, Fox's Gary Newman hinted at his desire to bring back "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". "I think if you look in our library, 'Buffy' is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back," Newman said at the INTV Conference in March. "It's something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with. When Joss decides it's time, we'll do it. And until Joss decides it's time, it won't happen." As it turns out, it appears that Whedon echoes Newman's idea.

The new "Buffy" series allegedly will be shopped to streaming and cable networks this summer.
