A similar message was also shared on the Blues Brothers' official Instagram page.
"Through his music, he will live forever," it read. "We ask that you join us while we offer condolences to the entire Murphy family."
The Ghostbusters star and the late John Belushi came up with The Blues Brothers sketch in 1978, during their time on popular U.S. comedy show Saturday Night Live, and they went on to score a cult hit with their self-titled 1980 movie, and spin-off band, of which Murphy was a key member.
Murphy appeared onscreen in both The Blues Brothers and its 1998 sequel, Blues Brothers 2000.
He had previously risen to fame as the sideman for blues icons Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Memphis Slim, and released his first solo album, Way Down South, in 1990.
