The late The Beattles star's first guitar, Hoffner Club 40, will be up for sale at an auction in New York later this month.

AceShowbiz - Late The Beatles star George Harrison's first electric guitar is expected to fetch thousands at auction in New York later this month. The Hofner Club 40 was Harrison's instrument of choice during the Fab Four's early days when he performed as part of The Quarrymen.

He traded his Hofner President acoustic jazz guitar for The Swinging Blue Jeans star Ray Ennis' Hofner Club 40.

Harrison donated the guitar to a band competition that would help promote the Beatles' 1966 German tour. It was won by Frank Dostal, a member of German band Faces, who owned the guitar until his death last year (17).

His widow, Mary Dostal, who was a member of the Liverpool girl group The Liverbirds, has offered the guitar to Julien's Auctions. It is estimated to sell between $200,000 and $300,000 at the auction house's Music Icons sale at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City on 19 May.

Other highlights include Bob Dylan's handwritten lyrics to "Blowing in the Wind", Elvis Presley's 1968 prototype Fender Telecaster electric guitar, Eric Clapton's Epiphone Granada guitar, and tragic Kurt Cobain's Fender Jag-Stang guitar.
