The actor, who helped complete his late wife's investigative book 'I'll Be Gone in the Dark' following her death, calls the 'surreal' turn of events 'bittersweet.'

AceShowbiz - Actor Patton Oswalt is in "freak out" mode amid reports suggesting his late wife's final true crime book led police to a suspected serial killer in a California cold case. On Wednesday, April 25, authorities in Sacramento arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo in relation to four murders in 1978 and 1980, and cops believe the former police officer may have been involved in a string of other unsolved killings, rapes and burglaries across the state from 1976 to 1986.
According to People.com, the same DNA was linked to 12 murders and 45 sexual assaults, earning him the nickname the Golden State Killer.
Patton's late wife, author Michelle McNamara, had unmasked DeAngelo as the prime suspect in her investigative book, "I'll Be Gone in the Dark", which the actor helped to complete following her death in 2016. It was released earlier this year, and reports indicate the couple's work may have helped detectives connect the dots and make the arrest, although that has yet to be confirmed.
Patton took to social media shortly after hearing the exciting news, and shared video footage of his reaction to the ongoing developments. "This is insane," he remarked. "Think you got him, Michelle...! Full tilt freak out in effect!"
However, Oswalt admitted the "surreal" turn of events is "bittersweet" without his late spouse around to celebrate the news. "She would be beyond excited about this," he wrote online in a follow-up message. "I think this is the definition of 'bittersweet.' "
Michelle died unexpectedly in her sleep at the age of just 46.
Meanwhile, Patton has found new love since her death, marrying actress Meredith Salenger in November 2017.
