AceShowbiz - "The Hitman's Bodyguard" hit the target. The R-rated action comedy beat the competition to top North American box office on its first weekend with an estimated $21.6 million. Despite exceeding industry projections of $16 million - $19 million, the movie's opening gross is one of the lower first-place openings this year.
"We're very pleased," says David Spitz, president of theatrical distribution for Lionsgate. "The audience reaction to the film has been fantastic. And we have a clear runway through the rest of August into September."
Critics didn't give much love to "Hitman's Bodyguard" which is starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds, giving it 39|percent| fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It, however, is better received by audience, who graded it B+ on CinemaScore.
On the other hand, fellow newcomer "Logan Lucky" bombed at box office. The heist comedy from director Steven Soderbergh only earned an estimated $8 million despite glowing reviews (93|percent| fresh) from critics.
Boasting an all-star cast which includes Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Seth MacFarlane, Katie Holmes and Hilary Swank, it places third behind last week's champion "Annabelle: Creation". Audience gave it a middling B CinemaScore.
The "Annabelle" sequel adds approximately $15.5 million to its domestic tally, or dropping 55.7|percent| from last weekend. "Dunkirk" and "The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature" move down two slots each, with approximately $6.7 million (dropping 38.4|percent|) and $5.1 million (dropping 38.7|percent|), respectively, to round out the top five.
