Series creator Ilene Chaiken will executive produce alongside Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey, who will appear on the project which will follow a new ensemble of women.

AceShowbiz - Eight years after completing its original run in 2009, "The L Word" will be coming back to small screen. Showtime is reportedly developing a sequel to the network's long-running hit lesbian series. Series creator Ilene Chaiken will lend a hand as an executive producer for the sequel, which will revolve around an entire new group of women, focusing on their lives, loves and tribulations.
Should the project move forward on the premium cable network, original cast members such as Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey are set to appear on the sequel as a point of connection from the prior series to the new one. Other original stars, including Erin Daniels (Dana), Laurel Holloman (Tina), Mia Kirshner (Jenny), Sarah Shahi (Carmen) and Pam Grier (Kit), may also make appearances on the new series.
Besides appearing on the potential series, Beals, Moennig and Hailey also serve as executive producers alongside Chaiken. It is reported that Chaiken's commitment to serving as showrunner on FOX's "Empire" forbids her to have a larger role on "The L Word" sequel. Sources reveal that Showtime is in search of a new writer, someone with ties to lesbian community, to serve as showrunner and bring a fresh take to the project. It is expected for the new writer to bring a fresh perspective about how relationships and experiences have evolved today.
"The L Word" ran for six seasons on Showtime from 2004 to 2009. The groundbreaking series was praised for their realistic portrayal of the lesbian community as well as for helping provide representation on television that inspired a new generation to come out. The original series won GLAAD Awards and earned Beals and Grier NAACP Image Award nominations.
