After receiving a lot of nominations for the 2016 Golden Globe Awards, both 'Carol' and 'Bridge of Spies' lead nominations in the BAFTA Awards.

AceShowbiz - The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced Friday, January 8 the nominations for its film awards. Cate Blanchett's movie "Carol" and Tom Hanks' movie "Bridge of Spies" led the nominations as they equally earned 9 apiece.

Both movies were pitted against each other in several categories including Best Film, Best Actress, Director, Cinematography and Production Design. Other contenders vying for Best Film title included "The Big Short", "The Revenant" and "Spotlight".

While "Carol" managed to help its leading actresses, Cate and Rooney Mara, take spots in Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively, "Bridge of Spies" could only grab a spot in Best Supporting Actor through Mark Rylance's performance. On the other hand, Alicia Vikander was surprisingly nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for his roles in "The Danish Girl" and "Ex Machina".

Leonardo DiCaprio's "The Revenant" earned 8 nominations. "Mad Max: Fury Road" followed with 7 nominations. "The Martian" and "Brooklyn" were each nominated in six categories. "The Danish Girl", "Ex Machina" and "The Big Short" received five nominations. Meanwhile, the epic space film, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", took four nominations.

The nomination list was announced in a live video stream by Stephen Fry and Gugu Mbatha-Raw from BAFTA's London headquarters. The awards ceremony will take place on February 14, with Stephen as the host.
