Weighing in on the recent headline grabbing issue, Peter Alan Laird who created 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' defends the 'Transformers' director's idea to recreate the turtles as aliens.

While many of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" fanboys were outraged over Michael Bay's idea to turn the reptilian heroes into aliens in the reboot, creator Peter Alan Laird has reacted otherwise. Laird, who co-created the popular comics with Kevin Eastman, defended Bay's idea by branding it "genius."
Weighing in on the recent hot issue, Laird wrote on his blog, "I have had several requests from 'TMNT' fans during this past week to comment on the idea of the Turtles being 'reimagined' as aliens for the upcoming 'TMNT' movie to be produced by Michael Bay." He added, "A few people, who don't seem to understand that I am no longer in control of the property, want me to stop this, somehow. Obviously, I can't do that, even if I wanted to."
The comic artist went on suggesting, "I would actually encourage 'TMNT' fans to swallow the 'chill pill' Mr. Bay recently suggested they take, and wait and see what might come out of this seemingly ill-conceived plan."
"It's possible that with enough truly creative brainpower to this idea, it might actually work. I'm saying it's probable, or even somewhat likely... but it IS possible," he defended Bay's alien race idea. "However, as I have pondered this further, I have realized that in one way it IS truly a genius notion."
At the end of his posting, Laird stated, "Anyway, to get back to the 'TMNT are aliens' thing, the reason I say it could be a 'genius' idea is that, for the first time, someone has come up with a way to have as many freakin' Turtles as they want. I mean, if the 'TMNT' are actually members of an alien race, there could be a whole PLANET of them! Joy."
After making an infamous statement that "these turtles are from an alien race", Bay sparked anger among fans of the iconic comics. Robbie Rist, who voiced Michelangelo in the original 1990 live-action film, accused Bay of "sodomizing" the original movies and causing "the rape of our childhood memories."
Trying to calm the angry fans down, Bay suggested them to "take a breath, and chill." The 47-year-old filmmaker wrote on his blog, "Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world."
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on Christmas Day in 2013. "Wrath of the Titans" helmer Johnathan Liebesman is close to tackle the directing duty for the live action/CGI combo movie which is predicted to cost an estimated $100 million to produce.
