After being known for his roles in several romantic and musical films, Zac Efron has landed his first action thriller project. The 22-year-old actor is set to star in "Fire", which is a movie adaptation of a graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis that was published by Image Comics.

In "Fire", Efron will tackle the role of a college student who "is recruited by the CIA, only to find that he has been trained for a program that creates expendable agents." The "High School Musical" hunk additionally will serve as executive producer alongside his manager Jason Barrett.

The author of the book, Bendis, has been tapped to write the script for the film. Neal Moritz and David Engel of Circle of Confusion are set to produce while Universal Pictures has picked up the distribution rights of the movie. However, no director has been chosen for this adventure flick which eyes a 2012 release.

Beside sealing a deal with Universal, Efron has also signed to star in Warner Bros. Pictures' "Back to the Future"-like film, so Deadline Hollywood reported. The project will meld "a pitch from writers Tim Calpin and Kevin Jakubowski" and Warner Bros.' upcoming "Algorithm". In this movie, Efron and Barrett will team up with Alan Riche as executive producers with Mark Gordon and Bryan Zuriff producing.

Zac Efron has successfully portrayed Troy Bolton in musical films "High School Musical", "High School Musical 2" and "High School Musical 3: Senior Year". He later starred in "17 Again" which aided him to gain Choice Movie Actor Comedy and Choice Rockstar Moment prizes at 2009 Teen Choice Awards. He recently appeared in "Me and Orson Welles", which has been released in November 2009.
