Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots, commonly known as STP, is an iconic American rock band that emerged from San Diego, California, in 1989. They became notable for their distinctive sound that blended elements of grunge, psychedelic rock, and classic rock, ultimately earning them a place among the most successful rock bands of the 1990s. They garnered widespread acclaim with their breakthrough single "Plush," released in 1993, which showcased their ability to create melodically rich and emotionally resonant music.
The origins of Stone Temple Pilots can be traced back to their early days when they initially went by the name Swing and later Mighty Joe Young. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Scott Weiland, drummer Eric Kretz, and brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo, on guitar and bass respectively. They signed with Atlantic Records, and upon changing their name to Stone Temple Pilots, they released their debut album, "Core," in 1992. The album was a commercial success, selling millions of copies and establishing the band as a major player in the rock scene.
Throughout the mid-1990s, STP continued to build on their success with subsequent albums, including "Purple" (1994), which featured hits like "Interstate Love Song" and "Vasoline." Their third album, "Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop" (1996), marked a departure from their earlier sound, experimenting with bossa nova and other styles. The band produced "No. 4" (1999) and "Shangri-La Dee Da" (2001) before experiencing a tumultuous split in 2003. During their hiatus, members engaged in various side projects, notably Scott Weiland with Velvet Revolver and Robert DeLeo with Army of Anyone.
The band's reunion in 2008 marked a new chapter, leading to a successful tour and the release of their self-titled sixth album in 2010. In 2013, they released "High Rise," their debut EP featuring Chester Bennington, the former vocalist of Linkin Park, who joined STP after Weiland's firing in 2013. Bennington's tenure lasted until 2015, when he departed amicably. Tragically, both Weiland and Bennington passed away in subsequent years, leaving a significant impact on the music community and STP's legacy.
In 2016, Stone Temple Pilots sought a new lead vocalist through an online audition process, ultimately selecting Jeff Gutt, who was announced as the new frontman on November 14, 2017. Under Gutt's leadership, the band released their second self-titled album in 2018, followed by "Perdida" in 2020, which showcased a more acoustic and introspective approach to their music. Throughout their career, Stone Temple Pilots have sold over 18 million albums in the United States and approximately 40 million worldwide, solidifying their status as a hallmark of rock music and leaving a lasting influence on the genre.
