My Darkest Days was a Canadian post-grunge rock band that achieved rapid fame in the early 2010s, propelled by a high-profile mentorship and a hedonistic breakout single. Formed in Norwood, Ontario in 2005, the band's core lineup solidified with lead vocalist Matt Walst, bassist Brendan McMillan, drummer Doug Oliver, guitarist Sal Costa, and keyboardist Reid Henry. Their big break arrived when Chad Kroeger, frontman of the massively successful band Nickelback, discovered them and signed My Darkest Days to his own 604 Records label, instantly elevating their profile within the rock scene.
The band's self-titled debut album, released in 2010, became their defining work and launched them onto rock radio. Its lead single, "Porn Star Dancing," became an immediate sensation, a raucous anthem that featured guest appearances from their benefactor Chad Kroeger on vocals and guitar hero Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society on a blistering solo. An extended version of the track also included a verse from renowned rapper Ludacris, blending rock and hip-hop. The song's provocative music video, filmed in Las Vegas, perfectly captured its party-driven spirit. The album showcased their blend of melodic rock and heavier riffs, citing influences like Nirvana, A Perfect Circle, and their mentor's band, Nickelback.
Capitalizing on the momentum of their hit single, My Darkest Days embarked on extensive touring throughout 2010, sharing stages with established acts like Sick Puppies, Trapt, Skillet, and Papa Roach. This period of relentless touring solidified their reputation as a formidable live act. They followed up with a second album, "Sick and Twisted Affair," in 2012, which continued their signature sound but did not replicate the commercial heights of their debut.
The band's story took an unexpected turn in 2013. Following the departure of Adam Gontier from the multi-platinum band Three Days Grace, Matt Walst was invited to step in as the new lead vocalist, joining his older brother, bassist Brad Walst. This opportunity led to the dissolution of My Darkest Days, as Walst focused his energies on his new role. The band, therefore, had a relatively brief but intense career, remembered primarily for their explosive entrance into the rock world with "Porn Star Dancing" and their association with some of rock's biggest names. They remain a notable chapter in the Canadian rock landscape of the early 21st century.
