Masami Nagasawa stands as one of Japan’s most accomplished and versatile actresses, having built a prolific career that spans over two decades since her debut as a child performer. Born on June 3, 1987, she began her acting journey at the age of twelve, making her film debut in the science fiction feature Pyrokinesis (2000), where she portrayed a young psychic orphan. This early role set the stage for a remarkable trajectory that would see her become a fixture of Japanese cinema, earning five Japan Academy Film Prizes and four Blue Ribbon Awards along the way.
During her high school years, Nagasawa gained wider recognition by appearing as one of the Shobijin in Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003) and its sequel Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). However, it was her leading role in the 2004 romantic drama Crying Out Love in the Center of the World that truly launched her into the spotlight. Her poignant performance earned her the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actress and two Japan Academy Film Prize awards, establishing her as a rising star in the industry. In 2006, she took on the title character in Tears for You, a role that earned her a Japan Academy Film Prize nomination for Best Leading Actress as well as a Bunshun Raspberry Award, showcasing her willingness to take on challenging and polarizing material.
Nagasawa’s career continued to flourish in the late 2000s and early 2010s as she took on a diverse array of roles. She starred as Princess Yuki in Shinji Higuchi’s historical epic Hidden Fortress: The Last Princess (2008), voiced the spirited Umi Matsuzaki in Gor? Miyazaki’s animated film From Up on Poppy Hill (2011), and delivered a standout comedic performance as Miyuki Matsuo in the romantic comedy Love Strikes! (2011), which earned her a second Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2016, she played a supporting role in Makoto Shinkai’s global phenomenon Your Name, further expanding her international profile.
The latter half of the 2010s saw Nagasawa take on increasingly complex and acclaimed projects. She won the Mainichi Film Award for Best Actress for her leading performance in the 2017 science fiction drama Before We Vanish, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. In 2019, she starred in the crime mystery Masquerade Hotel and portrayed Yang Duan He in the action-adventure film Kingdom, a role that earned her a Nikkan Sports Film Award nomination and which she reprised in the 2023 sequel Kingdom: Flame of Destiny. She also became a central figure in The Confidence Man JP film trilogy, playing the character Dako across three installments released between 2019 and 2022.
Nagasawa’s career has also seen her venture into international productions and high-profile collaborations. She appeared in Chen Sicheng’s Chinese buddy-comedy Detective Chinatown 3 (2021) as Anna Kobayashi, and worked again with director Shinji Higuchi on the critically acclaimed superhero film Shin Ultraman (2022), playing Hiroko Asami. In 2023, she took on the role of Scorpion-Aug in Hideaki Anno’s Shin Kamen Rider, further cementing her status as a versatile performer capable of moving seamlessly between genres.
