Formed in Nashville in March 2014, the American pop rock band LANY, an acronym for Los Angeles and New York, carved out a distinct space in the modern music landscape with their dreamy synth-pop soundscapes and emotionally resonant lyrics. The band's founding trio consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Paul Klein, drummer Jake Goss, and guitarist Les Priest, though Priest departed in 2022, leaving the core duo of Klein and Goss. They initially built a fervent online following by self-releasing music, with the 2015 single "ILYSB" becoming an early viral hit and eventually earning RIAA certification, solidifying their claim to fame.

Their self-titled debut EP in 2015 led to a major label deal with Polydor and Interscope Records. Their full-length debut album, LANY, arrived in 2017 and was supported by extensive touring, establishing them as global touring artists. The band's breakthrough, however, came with their sophomore album, 2018's Malibu Nights, a critically acclaimed and fan-beloved record that chronicled a personal heartbreak with stark honesty, spawning the successful title track. This period also saw high-profile collaborations, including "Okay" with singer-songwriter Julia Michaels and "Mean It" with fellow pop artist Lauv.

LANY continued a prolific release schedule with the more introspective and familial Mama's Boy in 2020, followed by the eclectic gg bb xx in 2021. After fulfilling their major-label commitments, the band embarked on a new independent chapter, launching their own imprint, Sunset Records, distributed through Virgin Music Group. Their first album under this new arrangement, A Beautiful Blur, was released in September 2023 and reflected their evolved artistic freedom. The band announced their sixth studio album, Soft, in July 2025, setting an October release date and continuing their journey as a duo dedicated to crafting expansive, atmospheric pop anthems for a dedicated worldwide audience.
