Kodak Black is the new spirit in hip-hop music industry. Born Dieuson Octave, Kodak was raised by an immigrant Haitian mother who had no husband to help her out. At the age of six, he started using "Black" and "Lil' Black" for his nickname. He later chose "Kodak Black" for his Instagram username, which eventually became his stage name when he began rapping.

When he was 11 or 12 years old, Kodak joined a rap group in Pompano Beach, Florida called the Brutal Yungenz. Under his stage names "J-Black", "Duffle Black" or simply "Black", he proved that even though he was the youngest in the group, his high-pitched vocals helped him to stand out on early tracks from the group like "What U Talking Bout" and "Walk With Me".

While the group stopped functioning as a unit, Kodak started putting his music on YouTube. One of his first songs was titled "Diary of a Brutal Kid", which detailed how harsh his haters had been on him. From there, he released some freestyles over songs by rappers like Mac Miller, 2 Chainz, Wale and more.

In December 2013, Kodak released his debut mixtape called "Project Baby". The set features 18 songs in total, with some tracks being produced K.E. On the Track, Rooq and DJ Jay-R among others. He followed it up with "Heart of the Projects" mixtape, which he shared in December 2014. The new set garnered lots of attention from fellow hip-hop musicians, including Drake who co-signed him after posting on Instagram a video of him dancing to Kodak's "SKRT".

In December 2015, Kodak released his 24-track mixtape titled "Institution". The mixtape came exactly 12 months after "Heart of the Projects" and 24 months after "Project Baby". The new set helped Kodak solidify his fan base outside his home town of Pompano Beach. Despite garnering lots of attention, Kodak was slammed by a series of legal issues. In October 2015, he was charged with robbery, battery, false imprisonment of a child and possession of cannabis in his home town.

In May 2016, Kodak was featured on French Montana's single "Lockjaw", from French's twenty first mixtape "MC4". According to Kodak, French was having some trouble writing the original hook for the song, so he took over and wrote the chorus. In June 2016, Kodak and Lil Uzi Vert embarked on "Parental Advisory" tour. The 19-date trek also featured 21 Savage and YFN Lucci in guest appearances.

Kodak released his fourth mixtape titled "Lil B.I.G. Pac" on June 11, 2016. It became his first record to chart on Billboard, reaching No. 49 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 18 on the Heatseakers Albums chart. Laced with 13 tracks in total, the mixtape boasts guest appearances from PnB Rock and Gucci Mane. The production, meanwhile, was handled by the likes of J-Gramm, Honorable C.N.O.T.E and more.

In February 2017, Kodak released new single called "Tunnel Vision". The track was played 25 million times on YouTube just two weeks after its release. Produced by Metro Boomin, Southside and Cubeatz, the track marks Kodak's first top 10 song on the Billboard's Hot 100 chart as it climbs to No. 8 on the chart. The song has been played 13.7 million times on SoundCloud since its release on February 16, 2017.
