Hiroyuki Sanada is a Japanese actor whose extraordinary career has spanned more than five decades, earning him international acclaim, a Golden Globe Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a place on Time magazine's 2025 list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Born on 12 October 1960, Sanada began his acting career in the mid-1960s at the age of five, becoming the protégé of legendary martial artist and actor Sonny Chiba. A black belt in Kyokushin karate, he initially gained prominence for his roles in Japanese and Hong Kong action films, where his physical prowess and screen presence set him apart. Over time, he evolved into a dramatic actor of considerable depth, establishing himself as one of Japan's most respected performers.

Sanada's breakthrough to international audiences came with his role as Ryuji Takayama in the 1998 horror classic Ring, where he starred alongside Nanako Matsushima, who had also been his co-star in the 1997 television drama A Story of Love. His theatrical work also brought him significant attention, particularly his portrayal of the Fool in a 1999–2000 production of Shakespeare's King Lear, a performance that led to his appointment as an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2002. Throughout the early 2000s, Sanada expanded his Hollywood presence with notable roles, including Seibei Iguchi in the acclaimed Japanese film The Twilight Samurai (2002), Ujio in The Last Samurai (2003) alongside Tom Cruise, and Kenji in Rush Hour 3 (2007) with Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan.

Sanada's Hollywood filmography grew increasingly diverse in the following years. He appeared in major productions such as Sunshine (2007), Speed Racer (2008), The Wolverine (2013), 47 Ronin (2013), the animated hit Minions (2015), Life (2017), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Army of the Dead (2021), and as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion in Mortal Kombat (2021). He also delivered memorable performances in Bullet Train (2022) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). On television, Sanada had a recurring role on Lost (2010) and appeared in the HBO series Westworld (2018–2020). His most celebrated role to date came in the FX historical drama series Sh?gun (2024), where he portrayed Yoshii Toranaga, a fictionalized version of Tokugawa Ieyasu. For this performance, Sanada won a Golden Globe Award, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a British Academy Television Award, cementing his status as a global star. In 2018, the Japanese government awarded him the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon for his artistic contributions, and he continues to be a commanding presence in both Japanese and international cinema.
