Emmy-winning 'Shogun' returns! New cast joins Hiroyuki Sanada for Season 2, set a decade later. Premieres 2027.

AceShowbiz - Production is underway for season two of the Emmy-winning FX drama Shogun, with the series adding five new actors to its growing cast. The latest additions include Risei Kukihara, Ryô Satô, Seishiro Nishida, Mantaro Koichi, and Takashi Yamaguchi, who will join the ensemble as filming continues in Vancouver. The new season is anticipated to premiere in 2027.
Although specific character details remain mostly under wraps, the names of the roles these actors will portray have been revealed: Gabriel (Kukihara), Rin (Satô), J?shin (Nishida), Sait? (Koichi), and Kan? (Yamaguchi). These fresh faces will be joining a cast that includes returning stars such as Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis, who will reprise their roles in a story set more than a decade after the events of season one.
Other returning cast members confirmed for season two are Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno, and Yuka Kouri, all of whom contributed to the series’ initial success.
Shogun was officially renewed by FX in April 2025, and since then the production has also brought in Asami Mizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki, Jun Kunimura, and Ren Meguro to further expand the cast for the upcoming season.
Among the new actors, Takashi Yamaguchi is likely the most recognizable to U.S. audiences, known for his appearances in Letters From Iwo Jima, Apple TV’s Pachinko, as well as episodes of CBS’ Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders and Fox’s Accused. Ryô Satô previously had a role in Martin Scorsese’s Silence and holds numerous credits in Japanese film and television, as does Mantaro Koichi. Seishiro Nishida received the best producer award at the 16th Japan Film Festival Los Angeles for his 2021 film ?tsunahiki no Koi/Love and the Grand Tug-of-War. For Risei Kukihara, this marks his first significant role in a major television series.
Produced by FX Productions, Shogun is created for television by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. They serve as executive producers alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca, and Hiroyuki Sanada. The series is adapted from James Clavell’s renowned novel of the same name, continuing to captivate audiences with its rich storytelling and cinematic production values.
Representation for Risei Kukihara is handled by 42 and CAA, supporting his emerging career as he takes on this pivotal role in the series’ sophomore season.
