He gained widespread fame with his breakout single "I Don't Want to Be," which was released in 2005 and became the theme song for the popular television series One Tree Hill. This song, along with others from his debut album, "Chariot," established DeGraw as a prominent figure in the music industry.
Growing up in a musically inclined family, DeGraw was exposed to various genres from a young age, which shaped his artistic direction. He began performing in local bars and clubs during his teenage years, eventually leading to his discovery by J Records. His debut album, "Chariot," released in 2003, featured not only "I Don't Want to Be," but also the title track and the single "Follow Through," both of which received significant airplay and helped solidify his presence in the music scene.
Following the success of his debut, DeGraw released his self-titled second album in 2008, which included the hit single "In Love with a Girl." However, his third album, "Free," released in 2009, marked a commercial decline and was his last release with J Records. This album featured the popular single "Not Over You," which garnered attention and further showcased his songwriting abilities. The album also included tracks like "Soldier" and "Sweeter," which resonated with his fans.
Throughout his career, DeGraw has collaborated with various artists, including Colbie Caillat. Their duet, "We Both Know," for the 2013 film Safe Haven, earned them a Grammy Award nomination, highlighting his continued relevance in the music industry. In 2013, he released the album "Make a Move," followed by "Something Worth Saving" in 2016, both of which continued to showcase his growth as an artist.
In 2022, DeGraw released "Face the River," an album accompanied by a documentary that delves into the making of the record and his personal journey through the grief of losing his parents.
