Elvis Duran
Elvis Duran, born Barry Brian Cope on August 5, 1964, is an American radio personality best known as the longtime host of the nationally syndicated "Elvis Duran and the Morning Show" on New York's Z100. His voice and comedic, interview-driven style have made him a staple of morning radio, reaching millions of listeners across the country and cementing his status as one of the industry's most influential figures.
His career in radio began after he adopted his distinctive on-air name, with early stops that honed his skills in various markets. Duran worked evenings at Z-93 in Atlanta with sidekick "Hot Henrietta" and later at Power 104 KRBE in Houston. He secured a significant role in October 1991 when he became both the program director and morning show host for KBTS (now KGSR) in Austin, Texas. Prior to that, he had a brief tenure as program director at WIOQ in Philadelphia. His big break came when he joined New York's legendary Z100, initially hosting the afternoon drive slot.
In April 1996, following the arrival of new program director Tom Poleman, Duran was moved to the coveted morning time slot, where he launched "Elvis Duran and the Morning Show." The program quickly became a ratings powerhouse for the station, known for its blend of celebrity interviews, listener interaction, humorous segments, and music. The show's success led Premiere Networks to syndicate it nationally, expanding Duran's reach far beyond the New York metropolitan area. Over the years, his microphone has been shared with a who's who of pop culture, including major interviews with music icons like Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Taylor Swift, as well as actors such as Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence.
Duran's contributions to radio have been recognized with numerous accolades, including multiple Marconi Radio Awards for Major Market Personality of the Year from the National Association of Broadcasters. He is also a bestselling author, having penned "Where Do I Begin? Stories from a Life Lived Out Loud." Beyond broadcasting, he is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly through the Elvis Duran Show's annual "Apple Pie Challenge" for cancer research. Elvis Duran continues to host his flagship morning show from Z100 in New York City, maintaining a direct connection with his audience and remaining a dominant voice in the ever-evolving landscape of broadcast radio.
