Ben Savage emerged as one of the defining child actors of the 1990s, capturing the hearts of a generation with his relatable portrayal of an ordinary kid navigating the trials of adolescence. Best known for his starring role as the earnest and often anxious Cory Matthews on the beloved ABC sitcom Boy Meets World, Savage grew up alongside his character, delivering a performance that felt authentic and enduring. His work on the series and its sequel cemented his place in television history and created a lasting legacy that continues to resonate with audiences.
Born Bennett Joseph Savage on September 13, 1980, in Chicago, Illinois, he was raised in a creative household as the son of industrial real estate broker Lewis Savage and his wife Joanne, who worked as an artist and poet. He is the younger brother of fellow actor Fred Savage, who found fame as a child star on The Wonder Years. The family moved to Los Angeles when Ben was young, and he followed his brother into acting, landing his first commercial at the age of six. His early film roles included appearances in Little Monsters alongside his brother Fred Savage and Howie Mandel, and The Last Halloween.
His career-defining opportunity arrived in 1993 when he was cast as Cory Matthews in Boy Meets World. The coming-of-age sitcom, which also starred Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel, and William Daniels, ran for seven seasons and followed Cory from middle school into college and marriage. Savage’s natural chemistry with the cast and his ability to balance comedy with heartfelt moments made him the anchor of the series. During this period, he also provided the voice for the title character in the animated series The Mighty Ducks and appeared in films like The Big Green.
After Boy Meets World concluded in 2000, Savage pursued higher education, graduating from Stanford University with a degree in political science. He continued to act intermittently, appearing in guest roles on series such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Chuck, and Still Standing. In a full-circle moment for fans, he reprised his iconic role as Cory Matthews, now a middle school teacher and father, in the Disney Channel sequel series Girl Meets World from 2014 to 2017. The show starred Rowan Blanchard as his on-screen daughter and brought Danielle Fishel back as his wife, Topanga.
Beyond acting, Savage has shown an interest in politics and public service. He has been involved in various political campaigns and explored a potential run for public office in Los Angeles. He remains a recognizable figure primarily for his work on Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World, projects that showcased his growth from a child actor into a seasoned performer capable of guiding a new generation of viewers.
