Justin expresses his excitement for his upcoming birthday weekend and announces plans to close the bar for a private party with the gang (aka, his "real family"). Moments later, a dashing musician rolls up to the bar and flirts with Leslie - until Justin reveals that the customer is his dad, Frank, making a surprise visit. Sounds like a nice thing to do, except Frank missed most of Justin's childhood and remains unapologetic about their complicated past. Danny ignores the warning signs from Justin and invites Frank to the birthday party. One problem: he didn't consult Justin.
After he flips out on Danny, Justin eventually warms to the idea of bonding with his dad. Is it possible that Frank has changed? No sooner does Justin feel okay with the new scenario than Danny receives a text from Frank - he's not coming. This results in a huge blowup from Justin, who blames Danny for the whole thing and storms off with a bottle of butterscotch liqueur, intent on drinking by himself.
For once, Danny recognizes his role in Justin's emotional roller coaster and the guilt leads him to a state of drunkenness at the apartment. Leslie discovers him and moments later a drunk Justin stumbles in from his bedroom. Through the boys' slurred words and scattered logic, Leslie manages to figure out that Danny wants to help Justin and Justin wants to let his dad know how he feels.
Meanwhile, Sabrina complains about her waitressing position at the bar and Shelly rags on her, labeling her problem a "white girl emergency." She challenges Shelly to switch roles and experience it for himself - and within minutes he finds the job exhausting, complicated and frustrating. He eventually learns the ropes and grows confident... only to realize Sabrina's still the one getting paid. At least she earned his respect.
Back at the bar the next day, the guys shock Justin by carrying in Frank against his will and forcing a confrontation between him and his son. Justin finally expresses how Frank's constant absence affected him... but Frank shrugs it off, stating the importance of his true passion: music. This fuels a sing-off between father and son - and Frank loses. Justin's victory sparks a real celebration and, needless to say, a lot of relief.
