Immediately after dismissing "Stefano", Montgomery notices that the door to his Reptile Room is ajar and investigates only to be attacked by an unseen figure. The next day, the Baudelaires discover Olaf standing next to Montgomery's corpse. Olaf threatens to kill Sunny unless the siblings accompany him to Peru, but is prevented from carrying out his plan when Mr. Poe arrives at the last minute.
When the police determine that the "Incredibly Deadly Viper" killed Montgomery, the siblings successfully prove the viper's innocence and unmask Olaf. Olaf escapes via the hedge maze as the siblings run into a mysterious woman who tells them to find Aunt Josephine.
