In a flashback scene, Ian is initiated in the Mohawk tribe with which he lives. The chief declares he has no more white blood and is given the name Wolf's Brother. Back in the present, Jamie and Ian prepare to transport the load of rifles, brought by Major MacDonald to Frazer's Ridge, to the Cherokee. Before they leave, Bree pulls Jamie into the house and lets him know about the demise of the Cherokee in sixty years that will result in the Trail of Tears. When Jamie and Ian arrive at the camp, Ian is shocked to see some Mohawk warriors from his former tribe, especially Kaheroton. Jamie senses his upset and asks what the problem is. Ian launches into a description of his life with the Mohawks. Early on, his attempts to speak their language amuse one of the young Indian women. He calls her Emily because he cannot pronounce her name. An attraction grows between them to the point that she offers him a totem of her clan, a stone carved in the shape of a wolf head. This is her proposal for marriage. Eventually, she is pregnant with their child but loses it in a miscarriage. This happens a second time. She asks him to leave, to return to his people. His spirit is too weak. He shows up in protest to find Emily with Kaheroton. In the present, Ian asks another Mohawk tribe member if Emily succeeded in having a child with Kaheroton. When told the pair have a son, he boils over and starts a fight with Kaheroton. Jamie breaks it up. In the process, another Indian agent known as Scotchee, challenges Kaheroton to a duel. He is afraid that the Mohawks will talk the Cherokee out of selling land to him. He selects pistols for the duel's weaponry. Ian gives Kaheroton Jamie's pistol to use. Scotchee cheats by turning before the signal is given. Ian throws Kaheroton's club, dislodging the gun. Scotchee is ridiculed as a coward. Jamie has pangs of guilt knowing the outcome of the ward and the Trail of Tears. Her tells the chief of this, warning him to fight for his people first. His people should hide when the time for exile is at hand. Back at the ridge, Claire uses Lizzy and Josiah as guinea pigs for her ether research. Malva Christie assists. Neither of the two can believe they were asleep. Upon Jamie's return, Claire meets him in the stable for a tryst. Malva watches from outside.
