Now that he's been promoted, Jim wants Michael to start taking into consideration that they are running the office together. This means putting his foot down about Michael taking up everybody's time with conference room meetings that don't make sense.
Pam is having a hard time telling her guests that she and Jim would rather receive cash for their wedding, instead of presents. All she really wants is a registered item at Crate and Barrel that allows you to ask for a toaster with cash inside.
The power struggle continues between Jim and Michael. They take a call from David Wallace; he tells his co-managers that due to budget cuts this year, not every employee will be receiving cost-of-living raises. Now they have to decide who will break the bad news to the staff.
Jim announces to the staff that this year, only sales staff will be receiving raises. This causes outrage in the office. As the employees start to complain all at once, Dwight makes it worse by fueling the fire, and Jim squirms.
Jim and Michael decide to go back in the conference room and discuss a better way to divide up raises. Using a Boston baked bean, they are going down a list of employees and rewarding them for how well they did this year at work by placing the bean next to their picture.
The staff barge in and discover that Michael and Jim are evaluating their worth using beans, and they flip out. Especially because they can clearly see where each of them stand in the eyes of their new bosses. Dwight uses this moment as a way to rally up the employees to despise Jim as much as he does. Michael returns with some gin and the two men bond.
While the office is still in chaos over the news about their raises, Michael sneaks into Jim's office to discuss what's going on. Michael smiles, because he no longer has to do a tough job like this alone. It hits Jim that Michael is his only friend in the office.
