When animal rights extremists break in to CalSci's animal labs to destroy them, they end up surprising and killing Prof. Preston Horowitz, who was there working late. With the case hitting so close to home the team works hard to find a suspect and are lead to Josh Landon, an animal rights activist attending CalSci, who suffers from schizophrenia. David and Nikki go to apprehend him at a lecture he is attending, but they end up spooking him, causing him to have a schizophrenic break which results in Josh wrestling a gun from a campus security guard. Josh then takes two professors hostage in the animal lab, and as the team tries to negotiate a peaceful surrender Josh grows more and more agitated. The team prepares to take the lab by force, but after going through Josh's papers Charlie discovers that Josh truly regards animals as gods, and suggests a different plan. They are able to get a police dog to run in to the lab, which distracts Josh just long enough for the team to retake the lab peacefully and save the professors.
