Martina is assigned the first year duty of going through 'jail mail', which are letters from potential clients or convicts looking for another trial. One case in particular stands out for her: the case of Hannah Atwood, a woman who pled out of a manslaughter charge with insanity and has spent the last 11 years in a mental institution. Thanks to a new medication, Hannah now seems remarkably lucid and claims she did not murder her then-boyfriend. Convinced she's telling the truth, Martina gets Donovan onboard and convinces a judge to set a competency hearing. The Assistant DA isn't keen to let a convicted murderer get back on the streets, and she promises Martina that they'll fight the case as much as possible. Eventually, a break in the case comes when Martina asks Hannah to help identify some of the guests from the photos of the party where the original murder occurred. Hannah loses it when she sees a picture of Jake Brills, her former step-father that abused her when she was a child. Martina is able to prove that Hannah suffered from conflated memory, which causes multiple memories to converge into one convoluted narrative. This explains why she was unable to recall the events of that night clearly, and ultimately results in Martina getting her released from the psychiatric hospital and Jake Brills getting arrested.
Meanwhile, Bonnie starts seeing a new guy (Rick) who sounds too good to be true. Knowing her terrible history with choosing men, Martina agrees to secretly 'run into them' while they're out on a date, and she winds up being impressed with him. Unfortunately, when Bonnie brings him to a family dinner, it's clear that Rick is too bland to keep up with the Garrettis. This episode also introduces Tommy Ligland, an ex-boyfriend of Martina's that now works in the District Attorney's office.
