Peggy, a self-described intellectual, yearns to become part of an exclusive ladies' book club at the Independent Bookstore. When the bookstore owner tells Peggy she wants someone to take over the lease because she's retiring, Peggy convinces Hank to put up the money in hopes of joining the book club and making a huge profit.

The woman replies that Peggy shouldn't have expected to make money; she only ran the store because her husband was wealthy. Desperate, Peggy allows Dale to sell guns at the store. Dale brings in a lot of business, and soon the guns take over the bookstore.

Peggy finally gets invited to the book club after bribing its members with huge discounts. But Peggy realizes at her first meeting that she doesn't fit in. Making matters worse, the women don't really care about the books - they just want an excuse to socialize. When Peggy returns to her store, she is horrified to find that Dale and his customers have shot most of the books.
