Ed Fogerty is the head of security for an international shipping company out of Chicago. While out on his regular patrol one night, he inadvertently catches two yardmen in the process of preparing a very expensive foreign sports car for what is clearly an illegal shipment out of the country. As it turns out, these loading dock guys are just two cogs in a much larger international car theft ring, so Ed is offered a deal to enter witness protection in exchange for testifying against them. What is also supposed to be part of his deal is regular visitation with his son, Miles. But strangely, there's nothing in Ed's file about having a dependant or any kind of special arrangement that Ed insists is a deal breaker if it's not honored.
As Mary and Marshall dig deeper, they discover that this isn't merely a case of missing paperwork. The child and even Ed's supposed ex-wife don't seem to exist, despite the photo of a young boy Ed has "illegally" brought with him into the program. To help solve the mystery of Ed's imaginary family, Stan calls in reinforcements in the form of Dr. Shelly Finkel, the agency shrink who assessed Mary after being kidnapped. Is this witness completely off his rocker or does he have a brain tumor? Or is there something more sinister fueling this familial fantasy? Mary is not going to give up until she makes good on her promise of helping Ed "find" Miles-even if that's deep within the recesses of his mind.
Brandi earns her Good Samaritan stripes when she happens upon an ailing Native American man lying in the street and brings him into the ER for treatment. Despite not being able to understand a word he's saying to her, she persists in getting him looked at and winds up saving his life.
