Norman Baker is a bridge architect who has just witnessed the collapse of one of his own designs, the Beaumont Bridge, which spanned the Platte River in Omaha, killing several people in its wake. He enters WITSEC in order to testify against the builder, Karl Hogeland, whom Norman faults with the collapse by hazardously cutting corners in the execution of his design. Hogeland had tried to get Norman to take the rap for bridge collapse in exchange for money and threatened Baker's life if he didn't. But Baker, a man of integrity who has been haunted by the deaths of innocent people, wouldn't take the easy way out. Despite Baker's claim that Hogeland forged vital documents, the builder is found not guilty. Even with the verdict, Baker can't let it go. What if his designs were faulty? More people could lose their lives on other bridges...
When Norman goes missing, just in time for the anniversary of the bridge collapse, and the police suspect suicide, Marshall doesn't believe that Norman would kill himself because he "knows his witness." Marshall and Mary commence a search that turns up several new questions and a few answers that eventually lead them back to Norman and one of his bridges.
With Jinx in rehab, Brandi needs help from Mary for a school project. But with this investigation going on and the memorial service for the anniversary of the bridge collapse imminent, Mary has no time to help her little sister. Ironically, when Mary needs some information that only Brandi can find for her, Brandi rises to the occasion.
