After Christmas, a new term begins at Truham Boys School. While suffering an unsatisfying closeted relationship with fellow student Ben Hope, Charlie Spring finds himself smitten with Nick Nelson, a one-year-older rugby player whom he is seated next to. Nick notices Charlie's above average natural speed in gym class and invites the lean, non-athletic boy to join the rugby team.
