With Jim now dead, he struggles with the idea of leaving Melinda behind and crossing over. Determined to talk with her before doing anything, Jim is frustrated when he discovers Melinda's grief is blocking her ability to see ghosts, including him. While trying to get through to her, Jim discovers that the ghost of a sickly teenage girl is haunting Melinda, delivering signs to her that she assumes are coming from Jim. Once at Jim's funeral, a moving speech by Jim's friend Tim Flaherty lifts the force blocking Melinda's gift, and she and Jim can finally communicate.
While difficult, Melinda tries to do the responsible thing, explaining to Jim that he needs to cross over. However, Jim is insistent that he stick around to make sure that Melinda is safe, especially with the creepy girl ghost he saw haunting her. Jim then works with Eli and Melinda to figure out what the ghost wants, and they discover that she was the step daughter of the detective that had shot Jim, Carl Neely. She had died from anorexia, and Carl blamed himself.
When he tried to get past it quickly he returned to work too soon, and he felt that clouded judgment caused the accidental shooting, making him feel even worse. Melinda visits Carl and helps him understand that his step daughter and Jim don't hold him responsible for what happened to them, and his step daughter crosses over. On the way home Jim and Melinda have a heart to heart, but when Jim notices a car accident up ahead he leaves Melinda and, despite her protest, jumps into the dead body of a man who they had both witnessed cross over. Knowing Jim's soul is now in the man's body, Melinda rushes to him as he sputters back to life, but when he sees her he has no idea who she is.
