Episode 2 Covers the Death of George VI, and the Accession of Elizabeth II in 1952.
In 1952 Elizabeth and Philip travel to Kenya where he shows the natives that tact is not his forte but is heroic when a rogue elephant appears. Back in England Churchill's detractors in his own party unsuccessfully attempt to replace him with the younger Anthony Eden, something which the king is keen to prevent but the king dies and Elizabeth is eventually located and notified.
Returning to England she is officially declared monarch but is sad to see her private secretary, Martin Charteris, replaced by the rigid Tommy Lascelles, a man who warns Townsend about his relationship with a certain royal.
