Med is overrun with victims of an apparent mass shooting inside a movie theater. The bystander that brought down the gunman is brought into the hospital and instantly declared a hero by social media and news outlets. In the panic and confusion of the shooting, no one noticed that the alleged gunman wasn't a gunman at all, but only came into the theater with a leaf blower. It was all an ill-conceived prank designed for a social media page, and the hero who brought down the prankster acted on instinct when he saw what he thought was a rifle. The victims in the supposed shooting were injured in the stampede to exit the theater. Although Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) attempts to console the hero, the man steps into traffic upon leaving the hospital and is declared dead on arrival when he's brought back to Med.
An internal debate ensues when the prankster - a 17-year-old boy - needs a liver transplant in order to stay alive. A victim who died as a result of the stampede carries a match. Dr. Rhodes (Colin Donnell) argues that the boy deserves a second chance. In the end, the bitter husband of the victim gives his consent to donate his wife's liver, and the boy is saved.
Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) and Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) contend with a bigoted patient. After diagnosis and testing, Dr. Halstead delivers unexpected news to the patient: she is part African American.
Dr. Manning (Torrey DeVitto) deals with what she thinks is a case of a 16-year-old girl's anorexia. Upon testing, it's determined that the girl's problems are a curable side effect of a growth spurt.
