Mike, who appears to be an extraordinarily fit and handsome young man, lives several states away in New Jersey. Saddled by insecurities around her weight and a fear of going out in public, Ashley has become more reliant on her online connection to Mike with each passing year, but has always found an excuse not to meet up with him. Mike has always been there for Ashley, consoling her through the period after her father's sudden death and becoming an intensely positive force in her life.
