"Awkward" is about teenager Jenna Hamilton (One Tree Hill's Ashley Rickards) who becomes a school celebrity after people mistakenly think she attempted suicide. Now she must deal with the stigma of being "that girl" - the girl who tried to kill herself - while also dealing with her crush on the most popular guy in school, a mean girl who wants to squash her, a weirdo guidance counselor, parents who just don't get it, and lots and lots of guy drama. Being "that girl" will eventually be the catalyst for amazing change, but not without some missteps along the way. In the wake of Jenna's prominence, she will redefine what being "that girl" means to her... cause even losers can have a fairy tale! That Girl will showcase specific incidents in our formative years that define us - sometimes for the best and sometimes for the worst. It explores teen themes such a jealousy, body image, parental guidance, boundaries, friendship and sex.
In the first half of "Awkward's" fifth season, Jenna and her friends' experience at Palos Hills High is almost over. Everyone's already gotten into college and there's the sense that anything can happen. When Jenna unwittingly gets school cancelled during a class prank, she becomes popular - just as Matty experiences life on the social outs for the first time. As always, Jenna and Matty are drawn toward each other, but with college looming just a few months away, it's harder than ever to decide whether they should be together. For all the characters, actions have more adult consequences than ever before: friendships will be tested to the breaking point, relationships will end, and the gang will have to say goodbye to each other and to Palos Hills. The season builds to the twin milestones of prom and graduation where Jenna will have to decide once and for all: can she and Matty make it work?
With high school ending and everyone heading down different tracks, the second half of the fifth season will jump forward to one year to summer in Palos Hills after their first year of post-grad life.
The second half of Awkward season 5 kicks off at the beginning of summer, a year after we last saw Jenna and her friends. She returns with a new-found confidence as she starts an exciting summer fellowship at an internet startup. As she reconnects with her high school friends, it's clear that there has been a lot she has missed. It's a summer of friends, self-discovery, romance and mystery that will forever impact everyone's lives.
